Habitat destructionObservatory of the Natural Environment rejects farmer's accusations

The Federation of Luxembourgish Farmers (FLB) had previously accused the country's politicians of demonstrating a "profound lack of knowledge" regarding agricultural topics.

The Observatory of the Natural Environment has now reacted to the criticism in a statement published on Tuesday, rejecting the Federation's accusations.

That agriculture is much more responsible for the destruction of the natural habitats of animals and plants in Luxembourg than, for example, overdevelopment, is "a fact", according to the Observatory.

During a press conference last week, the FLB stated that the agricultural industry is "disproportionally" held accountable for the loss of biodiversity and questioned the scientific basis of such claims.

In the press release published on Tuesday, the Observatory stresses that it is a "committee of scientific experts" and that its studies and statements are based on "scientific criteria". In addition, the negative impact of agricultural activity on the environment in Luxembourg has also been determined by the European Commission, the Observatory pointed out.
