Union protesters gathered at the Pfaffenthal bus stop in Kirchberg on Thursday morning to call for better toilet facilities at bus terminals.
The OGBL’s Sveinn Graas said both municipal councils and the government needed to take this concern seriously, as bus drivers have a right to use clean, accessible facilities during their shifts.
Many bus drivers, whether in public service or private, have to wait to use the bathroom as there are no toilets available on their bus routes. While men could in theory relieve themselves out in the open, the union highlighted that going behind a hedge, for example, is not permitted. With an increasing number of women joining the profession, the need for clean, accessible toilets has grown. The OGBL said it was highlighting this issue ahead of International Women’s Day.
The municipality of Diekirch recently announced plans to install toilets especially meant for bus drivers, Graas said, but in other areas, the situation was no longer acceptable.
