The Ombudsman for Children and Youth (OKAJU) in Luxembourg has voiced concern after another minor was sent this week to Schrassig prison due to a lack of available places at the Dreiborn Juvenile Detention Centre.

In a letter, the Ombudsman criticised the fact that such measures are still necessary. As the external oversight authority for the prison system, he warned that minors continue to be placed in an adult correctional facility because of capacity shortages elsewhere.

According to OKAJU, the situation highlights a structural lack of suitable accommodation for young people in conflict with the law. He also called for a permanent increase in the number of places available in specialised psychiatric centres for minors.
