Justice reportOn average, 14 fewer inmates in Luxembourg's prisons in 2019 than during the previous year

In 2019, the Schrassig and Givenich facilites had an average of 642 inmates over the course of the year. 55% of them were Luxembourgish residents, while 45% of them held the Luxembourgish nationality. These numbers were conveyed by the recently published brochure "La justice en chiffres 2019" ("Justice in numbers 2019"). A total of 898 applications for prison leave were filed, out of which 486 were accorded: 136 for temporal leave (57 granted) and 53 for electronic surveillance (14 granted).

The jurisdictions of Luxembourg City and Diekirch revoked a combined total of 1,753 driving licenses in 2019, while also awarding 1,013 provisional driving bans. The courts conducted 1,760 divorce cases, out of which 1,461 ended in divorce. 1,227 declarations of bankruptcy were filed. The administrative courts spoke 1,304 verdicts over the course of the year, while 8 criminal cases ended in acquittal.

Around €4.6 million came in through the awarding of fines, while the justice's own budget included a little under €115 million, spent among other things on the salaries of 287 judges, out of which 188 are women.
