EurostatOnline shopping up, but Luxembourg is lagging

The pandemic has been a boon for ecommerce, as more and more people took their shopping online. Luxembourgers are at the bottom of the league, however.

22 percent of EU companies declared online revenues in 2020, with 19 percent noting that these made up one percent or more of their total revenue. This represents a growth of 1% compared to the previous year, and 6 percent from 2010.

But despite initiatives like Letzshop being heavily pushed during the first lockdown, Luxembourg has lagged behind their neighbours in this respect. Only 9 percent of local companies reported making more than 1% of their revenue online in 2020, behind even Romania and Bulgaria.

This has in fact been lower than most previous years since 2012, with a record of 16 percent in 2013, and an average of 10.1 percent over the 10 years reported by Eurostat. It sounds like the pandemic did not send Luxembourgers online in droves.

At the other extreme of this is Denmark, with 38% reporting at least one percent of their 2020 revenue online, followed by Ireland and Sweden with 34%. The highest increase year on year has been in Belgium and Finland, with 5 percent.

The study looked at companies employing 10 people or fewer which reported at least 1 percent of revenue online.
