On Wednesday morning, former minister and MP Alex Bodry stated that, despite the crisis, Luxembourg should avoid going into too much debt. At the same time, Bodry believes that it is not necessary to adhere to the 30% of GDP threshold at all costs, and that the debt could also “settle at 35%.”

Bodry argued that, while he has always advocated prudent fiscal and budgetary policies within his own party, “it is important to help people in difficult times.” The increased allowance for single parents with the prospect of additional help in the future is “reasonable,” according to Bodry. The former minister also welcomes the tripartite agreement’s aids for households and businesses. Even if Bodry himself would have preferred “a cap on energy prices tied to consumption,” the MP is still “very happy to see that the Luxembourgish model works.” According to the former party president of the LSAP, tax reform will be a major campaign issue. Bodry calls for “a targeted, socially oriented tax policy.”

Alex Bodry has been a member of the Council of State since 2020. One of the main missions of the Council of State is to check the quality of laws. Bodry explained that while the Council is “politically assembled” it does not “act in a political manner.” The Council looks at texts “word for word, sentence by sentence,” something which the Chamber of Deputies “often neglects to do.”

When asked about the 2023 elections, Bodry said he would want to see Paulette Lenert become the LSAP’s top candidate, calling the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health a “godsend” for the party. Bodry praised her charisma, saying it is almost unheard of for someone to shoot “from nought to sixty” in the polls and remain popular for extended periods of time.
