On-site duty doctors will now receive €96/hour at weekends, and off-site duty doctors will receive €40/hour during the week, according to a new pilot project launched by the Ministry of Health and the Federation of Luxembourg Hospitals (FLH).

The agreement was signed on Thursday by the Minister of Health, Paulette Lenert, and the President of the FHL, Doctor Philippe Turk. The signing took place in the presence of the directors of the main establishments in the country, according to a joint press release published by the Ministry of Health and the FHL.

Weekend and duty doctors will now be compensated retroactively from 1 June 2022 with the rate varying whether they are on- or off-site. This cost will be added to the fees when medical acts are carried out.
The responsibility for the organisation of on-site and on-call lines and on-call duty will remain with the managing bodies of each hospital establishment, to which the related budget will be paid directly.

A support committee will be set up to ensure the agreement’s provisions are implemented, as well as evaluating whether the agreement will need to be adapted.

Dr. Turk called the agreement an important first step for the recognition and enhancement of hospital medicine, the cornerstone of the Grand Duchy’s health system. He added that it represented a significant step forward for the quality and safety of hospital care.
