Next Wednesday 3 April, a number of officers will take to the roads in a bid to reduce excessive speeding, which is "the principal cause of fatal accidents", say police. They will carry out "a number of preventative speed checks throughout the area".

This so-called "speed marathon" will last for the duration of 24 hours and will be effective through nearly the whole of Europe under the operation named "Slow Down Europe".

As a reminder, police apply a margin of tolerance of 3km/h for any vehicles travelling at a speed between 25 and 100 km/h, with a margin of just 3% for any speed exceeding this limit.

Offenders are punished with a €49 speeding fine for:

  • speeding less than 15km/h in built up areas
  • speeding less than 20km/h in rural areas
  • speeding less than 25 km/h on motorways.

Any speed exceeding the above limits is automatically punished by a fine of €145 and a 2 point reduction to the driver's license.
