Henri Cox warned that the police is facing some major challenges and said that this will become an urgent problem. Cox lamented that modernisation efforts only really began in earnest under the previous government. There are major shortcomings regarding personnel and infrastructure, according to Cox.
Cox also stressed that the police was not a “magic bullet” and that there are inter-ministry efforts to get a grip on security issues, particularly the deteriorating situation at Luxembourg’s train station and in Bonnevoie. The City Council recently resorted to hiring private security personnel to tackle squatters.
The minister aims to increase the number of personnel in the area. Currently, 50 officers in uniform and 3 units are deployed around the train station. Together with plainclothes officers the number of policemen and women in the area rises to over 80.
Cox is planning to add another 620 officers and 240 civilians to the police force until 2026. The minister said he was content with the current recruiting. Some 800 candidates had applied for 200 posts.
