Luxembourg prosecutors have opened an investigation after a woman was allegedly attacked on Grand-Rue in Luxembourg City in the early hours of 17 August. The investigation currently covers robbery, violent assault, rape, and attempted murder, according to a statement issued by Luxembourg's judiciary on Friday.

A 40-year-old Polish man has been detained in connection with the case.

Prosecutors say the woman was returning home at around 2am when the alleged attack occurred. She reportedly managed to escape during the assault and sought help from people she encountered while fleeing, but no immediate assistance was provided.

The woman later came across a police patrol conducting surveillance in the area. After she reported the attack, officers went to the location she identified and arrested a man matching the description she had provided.

Police also found several personal items at the scene that were identified as belonging to the woman.

Acting on instructions from the Luxembourg public prosecutor's office, police arrested the suspect and brought him before an examining magistrate. The judge subsequently ordered that he be held in custody.

Further inquiries and checks are being conducted to establish the precise circumstances and sequence of events.

Prosecutors said the public statement was issued after investigators had gathered the victim's account and completed additional checks that allowed them to reconstruct the broad course of events.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
