Following Covid-19 infectionsProtection intact despite lower antibody counts

Studies have shown that people who contracted Covid-19 have the same if not longer protection against the virus than those who got vaccinated.

However, the CovidCheck is valid longer for vaccinated people than for recovered ones, which is only accepted during six months.

Researchers from Leipzig in Germany recently found that immunity still prevails for a significant time after a person has recovered from a Covid-19 infection. Despite the fact that the amount of antibodies decreases over time, human cells are able to quickly recognise the virus and produce the necessary antibodies anew.

According to Dr Jean-Claude Schmit from the Health Directorate, the decision to still not recognise a recovery status as equally valuable as a vaccination status is a political rather than a medical one: "There are situations that do not really make sense from a medical perspective, but its a European decision."

Our colleagues from RTL also spoke to Prime Minister Xavier Bettel about the potential of recognising elevated antibody counts as a fourth "G" in the CovidCheck mechanism. He commented: "Discussions about the idea are underway. We already tasked the Superior Council for Infectious Diseases with a respective analysis. Similar, we are soon expecting data on third vaccinations. I think if antibody counts are added to the European standard, many people will benefit."
