Meteolux forecast highs of up to 35°C in southern Luxembourg on Monday. The orange alert will be in place from 1pm until 9pm.

As a reminder, the elderly, vulnerable and small children are advised to be cautious in extreme heat, although the following tips apply to everyone:

  • Close shutters, curtains and windows during the day and ventilate at night;
  • Drink plenty of water regularly throughout the day (a minimum of 1.5 litres of water per day);
  • Avoid going outside during the hottest hours (11am to 9pm);
  • Cover your head when going out;
  • Wear light clothing;
  • Limit your physical activities.

On Tuesday, the orange alert will be increased to red and cover the entire country from 1pm to 9pm, with temperatures expected to reach 39°C in the south and alongside the Moselle river.

The extreme heat naturally has repercussions on the country’s ozone levels. The Environment Administration, which constantly monitors Luxembourg’s air quality, said in a recent report that Monday could see ozone levels exceeding the usually safe threshold of 180 micrograms per cubic metre. This will remain the case for Tuesday, after which ozone levels should decrease once more.
Excessive ozone levels may have negative effects on humans and animals, in particular by irritating the respiratory tract and eyes. It is advisable to avoid spending unnecessary time outside, as well as avoiding physical exertion outside. To avoid adding to the dangerous ozone levels, it is also advised to avoid unnecessary car journeys.
