ConsumerismRules on non-essential product sales are incoherent: Nico Hoffmann

RTL Today
The president of the consumer protection group spoke to newspaper Tageblatt about the restrictions on non-essential products.

Hoffmann believes that the classification of goods into essential and non-essential products is highly contestable and difficult to understand for clients. He further criticises the decision to close all small businesses without exception, especially since many of them managed to implement successful safety procedures. Even though those spaces do not allow for great numbers of people to assemble in the first place, the owners are still being punished.

Hoffmann emphasised that he was in no way questioning the severity of the virus, nor the fact that the administration has to react with restrictions. Nevertheless, the president believes that coherence remains key to make people accept and follow the measures put into place.
