The "SaferNight" initiative is run by the 4 Motion asbl, offering safe spaces to event attendees. Director Carlos Paulos explains: "It's a place where people can seek out help if they have been threatened or attacked at an event such as the festival." This could refer to verbal or physical attacks, as well as discrimination. Paulos could not say if there had been an increase in such incidents, but confirmed the topic had become more and more popular in recent years. Initiatives such as these could help to change things for the general public.
As well as the "Lila Point" meeting spot, the festival will have a number of mobile awareness teams roaming the grounds. "They can check in if everything is alright and ask if people are OK," Paulos said. There will be 28 team members on duty at e-Lake, including psychologists, educators, social workers, and young people who have received special training for the role. They can all be approached by guests who feel unsafe or in need of assistance. The team can either administer help on the spot or redirect the guest to security services on site.
The project is necessary, Paulos said, as it draws attention to everyday gestures which can ensure a peaceful coexistence at large events. It is not just about consumption but about an exchange with others. He said the message is clear: "Celebrate safely, and get home safely," and not leaving anyone behind.
As well as the Lila Point, there will also be the Pipapo stand at the festival, with information and preventative items such as ear plugs and condoms. The Duckmobile drug-checking service will allow guests to have substances analysed and to receive information on different risks, with the goal of reinforcing security at the festival.
