30, 40, 50 per cent off: since 29 December, winter sales have been in full swing in Luxembourg and shops are offering great bargains. Even the weather seems to be playing along, as the cold temperatures outside encourage shoppers to buy coats and thick jumpers.
Shopping the sales twice a year is a Luxembourgish tradition, and it remains incredibly popular despite other offers which try to tempt customers all year round.
"Sales remain important as reductions are offered at a national level and that is a date for all customers", says Anne Darin-Jaulin, the Director of Luxembourg City's Commercial Union.
A lot of choice, good offers and customer service keep the business alive, say shop owners. Sales act as a magnet in a time when people increasingly turn to the internet for their shopping. In a fast-paced time, you have to keep up. We offer customers good bargains, and for us sales are an opportunity to make space for the new collection, explains Yannick Speltz, who is a salesman in a skate and fashion store.
Luxembourg City businessman Freddy Schaack says that many people still enjoy looking at merchandise in store. The goods sold online are not necessarily cheaper and people do notice that.
Before 2015, sales lasted for two weeks; nowadays, its four. Those who still wish to benefit from the offers can do so until Saturday 26 January.
