A fire broke out at around 9am on Wednesday in the Jean-Pierre Welter building of the primary school in Junglinster, affecting nearly 200 children from 13 classes, the municipality said. The blaze was quickly brought under control by firefighters and no injuries were reported.
The municipality said childcare services remain fully operational and supervision arrangements are guaranteed for the day. While the school building undergoes cleaning, affected pupils are being taught in alternative locations, including the sports hall, Maison Relais, Précoce facilities, and the festival hall of the Junglinster cultural centre.
The fire started on the second floor of the primary school in a paper towel dispenser in a toilet and caused significant smoke damage. Junglinster Mayor Ben Ries described the incident as an act of arson.
The mayor added that he hopes most classes will be able to return to the school early next week, although authorities have not yet received a precise timetable from the Inspectorate of Labour and Mines (ITM) and other competent bodies.
