According to reports in the Quotidien, and Lëtzebuerger Wort, the Ministry of Justice is considering the option of tearing down Schrassig prison and rebuilding it from scratch rather than renovating it. The prison, which was built in the 70s and early 80s, is said to be in an alarmingly poor condition.
The project would not impact daily activities at the prison since the demolition process would take place in stages. Once the new prison in Sanem opens its doors in 2023, half of Schrassig's 600 inmates will be moved to the new facility.
According to Wort, plans for the demolition have already taken shape. Minister of Justice Sam Sanson nevertheless stressed that the plan was still in its infancy. She explained that the idea is yet to be set in motion, adding that a new building with smaller units would be ideal.
