Candidates had until Wednesday 6pm to express an interest for the position.
On Wednesday afternoon, Wilmes, the first alderman of Luxembourg City, handed in his application in person.
The MEP Frank Engel had already announced his interest in running for the position in December on Radio Lëtzebuerg and reiterated this interest on the radio on Wednesday morning.
While written applications had to be posted by 9 January, it is relatively unlikely, although not impossible, that another candidate will be joining Wilmes and Engel in this head to head. If this does happen, then we will know by Thursday evening.
The CSV's New Year reception is taking place later on Thursday. The national committee will meet first to verify the applications and then confirm them at 6.30pm.
