Den 9. August gouf et en Tornado hei am Land. Eng vun de Gemengen, déi et uerg getraff hat, ass Käerjeng. Wéi ass d'Situatioun am Moment?

Mayor Michel Wolter has praised the sense of solidarity which followed the dramatic events, saying people across the country responded to their call for help. 11,000 hours of help and work, on behalf of technical services, fire fighters, the army, and forest rangers among others, not to mention the help donated by businesses and volunteers.

The damage is still being fixed. In Käerjeng alone, 11 buildings were damaged, particularly sporting infrastructures and a football field. 9 of 14 lamp posts had to be replaced for safety reasons. Two roofs also had to be completely replaced.

At one point, 50 people had to be placed in hotels - now, there are just two families remaining in temporary accommodation. The majority of people affected wanted to stay at home where possible, particularly in homes where the lower floors were untouched. These homes were prioritised by roofers so families could continue their daily lives.

The people in temporary accommodation were also treated as priorities. There are currently 6 houses which are uninhabitable, but these should be repaired within the next month.

Exact damage totals will only be available from the start of next year. The municipality is estimating over a million.

Enormous assistance came from the part of the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps, the army and forest rangers.

Some €400,000 worth of donations was received by Käerjeng municipality in the wake of the tornado.

Wolter said there were ongoing discussions regarding how the money should be split. In a meeting with Caritas, the Red Cross and local social welfare offices, some questions were raised, such as should the money help residents who did not have insurance, or should it help in cases of insurance excesses.

The first meeting two weeks ago did not come to a distinct conclusion. Local officials are waiting for full reports from the insurance companies before progressing further.

The funds will be dispersed transparently through a municipal committee working together with the opposition. Regular activity reports are to be published.

A large amount of damage in the municipality will be covered by insurance companies, with Wolter estimating this to be up to 98%.
