St George's International School in Hamm on Thursday marked its 35th anniversary with the opening of a new sports facility named after pioneering Luxembourg cyclist Elsy Jacobs. The inauguration brought together officials and guests including First Government Advisor Martine Molitor, representing Education Minister Claude Meisch, as well as representatives from the British Embassy, the municipality of Luxembourg City, and the Municipality of Garnich.
Luxembourg's most decorated female cyclist Christine Majerus also attended and addressed students and guests.
In a statement, school officials describe the new facility as a major investment in "student wellbeing and development". It is named in honour of Jacobs, who became the first women's road cycling world champion in 1958 and is widely regarded as a trailblazer for women in sport.
Founded in 1990, St George's International School was established to support internationally mobile families and now has around 850 students from 73 nationalities. The school said it continues to play a role in Luxembourg's position as an international hub and was recently listed among the top 100 private schools globally by Spear's.
Principal Zeba Clarke said the school has grown into a "vibrant and inclusive community" over the past 35 years, highlighting both academic success and students' "sense of belonging" as central to its development.
Chair of the Board of Governors Christophe Jacamon used the opportunity to highlight how the new building fits into the school's broader educational approach, noting that sport helps build confidence, resilience, and a sense of community. He further thanked Luxembourg authorities for their support, which he described as "instrumental" to the school's growth.
