Nearly one in three households in Luxembourg owns at least one pet, according to the latest figures from the National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC).

In 2025, around 92,000 households had a pet, with roughly 191,000 animals recorded across the country, including about 80,000 cats and 62,000 dogs.

Pets come at a price

Owning a pet means setting aside a budget. On average, owners in Luxembourg spend €1,900 a year on their animals, with around €1,240 going to food and accessories and a further €660 on veterinary care and other services.

Dogs are slightly more expensive than cats. Households with a dog spend more than €2,200 a year, compared with around €1,850 for households with a cat.

Pets more common in houses than flats

Housing also plays a part. While 43% of people living in a house own at least one pet, the figure falls to just 21% for those living in flats.

Families with children are particularly likely to have a pet. Around a third of people aged over 65 who live alone also own one, and this group spends the most on their four-legged friends, at almost €2,800 a year.
