New Covid measuresSupermarkets close off non-essential shelves

RTL Today
As of Sunday they are a familiar sight in Luxembourg supermarkets: plastic sheets covering non-essential shelves, and tape on both sides closing off complete aisles.

With the new covid measures banning the sale of non-essential goods, supermarkets have had to adapt and limit their product offer. Our RTL colleague Tim Morizet visited Cactus Belle Etoile on Sunday morning.

30 staff members gathered at 5am to close off non-essential products at the supermarket, preparing for the opening three hours later.

"There are grey zones," explains Manu Konsbruck, director of Belle Etoile. The supermarket is allowed to sell cooking pans, as they are deemed essential, but not plates. It is all a matter of interpretation, he says.

Video report in Luxembourgish:

Supermarchéë mussen hir Offer u Produite limitéieren
Wien e Sonndeg nach kuerz akafe war, huet se gesinn: d'Ofspärbänner, d'Plastiksbaatschen, an d'Notten: dës Produiten dierfe mer op Weideres net verkafen.

Different supermarkets will therefore have come up with their own criteria for what remains on sale. Nevertheless, the option to order online and pick up outside remains.

Supermarkets were frequently at the centre of criticism for being unfair competition to small businesses during the first lockdown in March. While smaller non-essential businesses had to close, supermarkets could remain open and continue to sell non-essential products.
