Water quality tests carried out on 9 September detected the toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa at Rommwiss beach, with toxin concentrations exceeding the safety threshold.
For safety reasons, swimming and water contact are now strictly forbidden at Rommwiss. Water sports and fishing are also banned, and visitors are urged to prevent dogs and other animals from drinking the water.
Exposure to blue-green algae can cause health issues ranging from headaches and skin irritations to burns and nausea. Anyone experiencing symptoms after being in or near the water should seek medical advice and inform their doctor of possible contact with toxic cyanobacteria.
Swimming remains permitted at other Upper Sûre lake beaches, including Burfelt, Insenborn, Liefrange, and Lultzhausen, where no dangerous algae concentrations have been reported.
Authorities stress that the drinking water supply remains safe. Raw water is drawn from a depth of around 25 metres at the Esch-sur-Sûre dam, where cyanobacteria concentrations are minimal, and the water treatment process effectively removes any toxins.
