Jean Asselborn on AfghanistanThe EU must help the people who worked for it

RTL Today
The EU's foreign ministers conferred on the situation in Afghanistan on Tuesday. RTL spoke to Jean Asselborn about the role of the EU.

The role of the European Union is to help the people in Afghanistan who worked for it over the past 20 years and now risk to lose their lives over it, said Jean Asselborn in a Skype interview with RTL.

They must be given a chance to settle in a European country. He is hoping that the 27 member countries will help with evacuating these people. It is a moral duty towards those who helped the EU over the past years.

How to deal with the new Taliban regime as a European? It is important that women not be discriminated, said the Foreign Minister.

The new government must represent everyone and respect fundamental human rights. "If this is the case – whether they are called Taliban or not – then cooperation is possible. If it isn't [...], then I don't see how we can have normal relations with the regime."
