The tram is set to connect to Cloche d'Or by autumn 2023. The location will act as an interchange site for public transport and therefore include a park and ride area. Officials hope that the location will help ease the amount of traffic in the city centre. Construction works next to the new stadium are well underway.
Minister for Mobility and Public Works François Bausch explained that the P+R will serve two functions. First, it will act as a classic car park where around 2,000 people can leave their cars and switch over to the tram. Second, it will help in the case of larger events at the new stadium.
The P+R falls under the planning of the "tram project". Costs for this part of construction are covered mostly by the government, not the municipality of Luxembourg City. However, the latter will be in charge of managing the majority of the new parking site. Apart from the tram, the site will also be connected to the bus networks AVL and RGTR.
Minister Bausch further highlighted the importance of designing a vibrant interchange, where people are also able to buy food while waiting. Costs for the entire site are estimated to be €74 million.
Construction works in Cloche d'Or began only three weeks ago, while those at another site are slowly coming to an end. The P+R at the Kirchberg interchange will open on 1 May. 300 parking spots will be available to the public, while the remaining ones were bought by companies around the area. The P+R will be run by a private company.
Minister Bausch emphasised that the Kirchberg parking will support short-term stays due to its proximity to the city centre in comparison to the other sites. He further announced that additional parking locations are already in planning, as well as a reorganisation of the site near LuxExpo.
