Nearly 14,000 people are subscribed to the Vél'OH system, a number which vastly exceeds the expectations set by Luxembourg City council and the bike supplier, JCDecaux.
Patrick Goldschmidt, alderman for mobility, said the service had gone from having just under 8,000 subscribers at the end of November 2018, using the old system, to 13,788 subscribers today.
However, this success has not come without issues - complaints and vandalism have increased, with bikes missing from certain stations, moved to others, and so on. Goldschmidt said not a day went by without receiving requests for more bicycles and more stations, resulting in more work with the supplier to increase availability, particularly in Dommeldange and Beggen.
There are currently 788 electric bicycles in service across 88 stations, counting 1,717 points.
Goldschmidt said the supplier needed to be more severe in terms of abandoned or vandalised bikes, and improvement to the system was needed to identify the last user, as a number of users were misusing the service.
