General crime rose by 1.5% in 2018, predominantly consisting of break-ins and theft. At 61%, theft remains the most common infraction. In the last year, there were around 1,500 residential break-ins. Pascal Peters, the central director of the police, attributed the increase to a number of burglaries controlled and managed by crime groups abroad. One of the individuals arrested by the police confirmed this information.
As Peters explained, patrols in Luxembourg are unable to deter such internationally-organised burglaries. Instead, to put an end to these break-ins, the Grand Duchy must work with its neighbours.
As for infractions against others rather than property infractions, three people were killed in Luxembourg last year. However, the number of physical violence and injury cases relating dropped to 2,600. Down from 2,690 in 2017, and 3,187 a few years prior in 2014.
