Heavy rain has reached Luxembourg, immediately causing disruption on the roads. Fallen trees have blocked routes in several areas, accidents have already been reported, and motorists are being warned of the risk of aquaplaning.
MeteoLux issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for all of Luxembourg on Friday evening, with hail, strong winds, and intense local rainfall as the country remains under a red heat alert.
The thunderstorm warning will be in force from 6pm until 11.59pm. Gusts could reach 80 km/h, while between 10 and 20 litres of rain per square metre may fall locally within a short period. Hail is also possible.
The warning comes amid an exceptionally prolonged and intense heatwave. Luxembourg has been under a red heat alert since Monday afternoon, with extreme heat stress expected to persist and little relief forecast overnight.
The Environment Agency has also warned that ozone concentrations could exceed the pre-information threshold of 160 micrograms per cubic metre across Luxembourg between midday and midnight on Friday.
