A total of 37 kg of tobacco and 24 bottles of vodka from Luxembourg were found in the vehicle, which was stopped on the A29 motorway near Rouen.

According to local officials, the drivers further had €6,760 in cash, apart from the €5,500 worth of alcohol.

In March, the culprits will face prosecution for the smuggling incident.

At the moment, French people are allowed to transport one carton of cigarettes and 10 litres of alcohol across the border.
