During its traditional Christmas celebration, the Army looked back on a busy year both nationally and internationally. This would not have been possible without the efforts of the entire personnel, stressed Chief of Staff Steve Thull, before expressing his heartfelt thanks.

The Army currently has soldiers stationed in Lithuania, Mali and Mozambique, while personnel in Afghanistan were withdrawn in May.

Internally, the fight against Covid was at the forefront of the Army’s work, too. Starting in November, the Army has been assisting with contact tracing, and will take on additional tasks in the new year.

The Minister for Defence, François Bausch said:The army has agreed to erect test centres throughout the country and to help test people who have received their first vaccine and are waiting for their second."

Around 150 personnel will be assigned to this task. This means that some of the army’s other activities will be reduced.

Besides the health crisis, the army also helped after the devastating floods in summer. Bausch made a point of thanking those involved for their tireless commitment.

The Army is expected to receive new military vehicles which will help it fulfil its daily tasks, but also ensure the protection of soldiers in the field.
