The reports states that at 4pm an accident involving several vehicles occurred on the A3 heading towards France, between Livange and the Croix de Bettembourg. The high number of emergency vehicles that were scrambled to the scene suggested the seriousness of the accident.

The motorway was closed for several hours and a detour via exit 2 (Livange) was been put in place. Traffic from Germany and Belgium to France was diverted to the A4 and A13.

A bulletin from 112, was issued at 5pm indicating that a person had been run over on the A3 at the site of the accident.

At around 6.45 pm, several motorists, exasperated at the lengthy delays, took the decision to turn around on the motorway and drive back to a previous exit, much to the chagrin of the Luxembourg police.

At around 7.00 pm the police officially authorised the vehicles to turn back, taking the exit near the Berchem area.

The route remained closed until 9.15pm.
