Waldhof Mannheim beat recently relegated Fortuna Düsseldorf 2-1 in their season opener. On Friday evening, it was Vincent Thill who put the home side ahead in a sold-out Mannheim stadium with a fine long-range strike, netting the first goal of the new season in Germany's professional leagues. On the other side, the 21-year-old Luxembourger Miguel Goncalves, who joined Fortuna over the summer, spent the entire match on the bench.

Things did not go quite as smoothly for Eldin Dzogovic and 1. FC Magdeburg in the 2. Bundesliga. In front of their own fans, they were beaten 6-1 by Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday afternoon. The 23-year-old Luxembourg defender did not come off the bench.

Saturday also marked the start of Ligue 2 in France, where Luc Holtz and his relegated FC Metz side hosted Guingamp. Goals from Fall and Abuashvili turned around a match in which Metz had trailed 1-0, sealing a 2-1 win that kept all three points at home. Luxembourger Kadamani was brought on in the 65th minute.
