CaritasWe hope to continue working in Afghanistan, says Marie-Josée Jacobs

RTL Today
On Monday morning, the president of Caritas Luxembourg gave an interview at RTL Radio.

For years, Caritas has been active in Haiti and working tirelessly to help those in need. The recent earthquake has been devastating for the Caribbean island, and Caritas now helps to rebuild houses by providing both financial and material means, Jacobs explained. At the moment, only people from international Caritas branches are on the ground.

In Afghanistan, however, one Luxembourgish doctor is active for the humanitarian organisation. Jacobs admitted not having heard anything concrete from the practitioner over the last couple of days and underlined how difficult the local working conditions are. Caritas fears that following the Taliban takeover, Afghanistan may face food shortages and famines.

Nevertheless, the former CSV politician expects that humanitarian organisations will be able to continue working in Afghanistan, even under Taliban rule.

Jacobs also concluded that the change of power is one of the greatest failures in recent Western history. She believes it has made clear once and for all that our values and ways of living cannot simply be adapted in distant countries: "We need a fundamental change of approach."

When asked about people's willingness to donate money to Caritas, president Jacobs praised the generosity seen after the recent floods. The organisation is mostly focused on rebuilding and restoring damaged houses.
