It’s an image we’re all very familiar with in Luxembourg: large numbers of people from neighbouring countries queuing up to take advantage of being in Luxembourg (usually for work) to bring back home bags full of alcohol.
However, contrary to common belief, the Grand-Duchy doesn’t boast the lowest alcohol prices in the region. A Eurostat study compares alcohol prices in the EU in 2018 (spirits, wines and beers). Based on the European average level index of 100, this is what results say:
Belgium has the highest prices in the greater region, with a score of 106 (6% pricier than the European average)
France has a score of 94 (6% cheaper)
Luxembourg has a score of 93 (7% cheaper)
Germany has a score of 89 (11% cheaper)

In short, it’s Germany who has the lowest alcohol prices in Greater Luxembourg.
At €800, Luxembourg spends most in EU per capita on alcoholHowever, when it comes to the most expensive prices, Finland (82% above average), followed by Ireland (77%) and Sweden (52%) are the reigning countries.
