The first apartments are set to be completed by the end of 2023. Until then, the municipality wants to have completed a school for 300 additional pupils, a child care centre, as well as the extension of the water purification plant.
During a press conference on Monday, Minister for Housing Henri Kox explained that constructions are well-underway on the 25 hectare industrial site. 70% of apartments are to be rented for affordable prices. After the 15-year-long construction project comes to a conclusion, a total of 870 apartments will be ready, thus offering housing to 2,000 people. At the moment, the municipality of Wiltz counts around 7,000 inhabitants.
The new quarter builds both on renewable energy and sustainable material, and was inspired by a similar site which is currently being constructed in Olm. Cars will not be allowed in the area so that residents can move around freely. However, the respective car parks will not be further away than 200 metres.
The first phase of the project will cost the government around €126.5 million, while estimates for the entire project are set at €286 million, Minister Kox noted. The new quarter will be completed by 2038.
The Housing Fund's next major construction project will be the "Projet Neischmelz" in Dudelange, which will offer 1,000 apartments by 2035. Minister Kox expressed his hopes that the draft law for the undertaking can be finalised by summer this year.
