Political futureYoung Democrats demand voting rights for 16-year-olds

RTL Today
The junior branch of the Democratic Party (JDL) issued a press release in which they argue for an extension of voting rights.

The issue was already part of the 2016 referendum, when an overwhelming majority of the population voted against an extension of voting rights to 16-year-olds. Back then, the proposal envisioned participation on municipal, national, as well as European level.

The Young Democrats have now launched a new effort to put municipal elections back on the table, starting in 2023: "Luxembourgish youth should have more influence on the country's political decisions."

The junior party believes that the education system should therefore expand civic lessons in high schools to foster political engagement from an earlier age on.
