A passenger tried to smuggle cocaine into Germany at Düsseldorf airport by hiding it inside lollipops, among other things. Three kilograms of the drug were concealed inside the sweets, camouflaged with red icing, as the Essen Customs Investigation Office announced on Thursday. A further six kilograms of cocaine had been stashed in shoes, backpacks and handbags.

The 68-year-old suspect had travelled from Brazil to Düsseldorf via Lisbon last Wednesday. After the plane landed, two sniffer dogs carried out a routine check of the luggage and alerted officers to the man's suitcase. He was arrested and brought before a judge the following day, who ordered him remanded in custody.
