On Thursday afternoon, two trams collided in the city centre of Gelsenkirchen, leaving 25 people injured. Three are said to be fighting for their lives, while seven others sustained serious injuries.
A driving school tram came to a standstill between the Veltins-Arena and Willy-Brandt-Allee stops. A second tram, fully loaded with passengers, crashed into the back of it. The scene of the accident on Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse was closed off.
Multiple emergency teams were deployed to treat the injured.
The police are now investigating the cause of the accident. According to a police spokeswoman, the reason why the driving school tram unexpectedly stopped still needs to be clarified.
