On Wednesday evening in Strasbourg, Green MEP Tilly Metz was nominated by her political group as a candidate for the position of Vice-President of the European Parliament.
In an internal party vote, Metz saw off two German candidates and was nominated by her party for the position of Vice-President of the European Parliament.
Given the current times and circumstances, the Luxembourg politician stated, Parliament needed a strong progressive and Green presence.
Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) politician Marc Angel was the most recent Luxembourger to serve as a Vice-President of the European Parliament, holding the post between 2023 and 2024.
The coveted role involves, for instance, presiding over plenary sessions in the absence of President Roberta Metsola, as well as representing the legislature at major events, including on the international stage.
In total, there are 14 Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament. Metz must now secure the plenary’s backing by 12 November.
A defeat would likely come as a surprise for the Greens, who, based on the arithmetic distribution of seats among the political groups, are generally entitled to such a position.
The task now, according to the politician, is to win over the other parties.
