SUSPECT EXTRADITION – A 36-year-old suspect has been extradited from Italy to Luxembourg for his alleged role in a so-called 'mum and dad' phone scam ring after he allegedly supplied Luxembourg numbers used to send fraudulent emergency messages, generating over 15 police complaints.
SWIMMING BAN – The Water Management Administration has confirmed that visitors to the Burfelt and Rommwiss beaches on the Upper Sûre Lake are now barred from swimming, fishing, or letting their pets drink from the water following the discovery of cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae two days ago.
FUEL PRICES – Fuel prices in Luxembourg are rising sharply from today. Diesel goes up by over 10 cents a litre to €1.90, while petrol rises by 7 cents. €1.69 for 95-octane and €1.84 for 98-octane. Heating oil sees the steepest increase, up 11 cents to €1.40 a litre.
COLOMBIA EARTHQUAKE – Rescuers in Colombia pulled a 32-year-old woman alive from rubble yesterday, to cheers from exhausted search crews. Daniela Largo was carried out wrapped in a blanket as relatives shouted with joy. Soldiers, firefighters, and volunteers are combing collapsed buildings across western Colombia after Monday's 7.4-magnitude earthquake, the country's strongest in a century, which has killed at least 241 people and injured more than 1,600.
SYRIA SENTENCE – A Syrian court has sentenced former president Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, over war crimes and crimes against humanity committed since the start of the civil war in 2011. It is the first verdict against Assad, who was overthrown in December 2024 and fled to Moscow.
UKRAINE WAR – Ukrainian President Zelensky has warned of a new large-scale Russian military mobilisation planned for the autumn. This is said to be based on intelligence information. In a video address, he renewed his call for concrete peace negotiations, saying Ukraine has put proposals to the US, ahead of planned talks between US envoys and Russian authorities.
SOLAR ECLIPSE – The moon will pass in front of the sun, creating a total solar eclipse visible from Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, and a small area of northeastern Portugal today. A major partial eclipse will be visible across most of Europe, including Luxembourg, as well as parts of North America and northwestern Africa. It will start at around 7.20pm our time, with the peak around 8.15pm.
EUROPE HEATWAVE – Extreme heat continues to grip much of Europe, with warnings in force from the UK, Belgium, and France to central and eastern Europe. Record-breaking temperatures topping 40 °C have hit Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary in recent days, while southern Europe and the Balkans face ongoing drought and wildfire risk. In England, amber heat-health alerts remain in place, with highs of up to 38°C degrees forecast later this week.
Germany's transport minister is meeting state counterparts today over problems caused by low Rhine water levels. Sunday lorry bans have already been lifted in some states, while ships on the Rhine and Danube are carrying less cargo, or avoiding certain routes altogether, pushing up transport costs.
FOOTBALL – Cristiano Ronaldo has married his long-term partner, model Georgina Rodríguez. The Portuguese footballer confirmed the news on Instagram, posting a photo of the couple's wedding rings. Reports say the private ceremony took place in Cascais, near Lisbon, with the couple's five children present.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino is expected at the UEFA Super Cup between PSG and Aston Villa tonight, days after UEFA and other confederations called for a review of his leadership over his now-scrapped plan to bring private investors into FIFA's World Cup. The match decides Europe's top club side, pitting the Champions League winners against the Europa League holders.
ATHLETICS – Britain's Romell Glave upstaged two-time defending champion Marcell Jacobs to win European men's 100 metres gold in Birmingham yesterday. Glave clocked 10.09 seconds, with Britain's Jeremiah Azu taking silver in 10.16.
Meanwhile Luxembourg's Vera Bertemes-Hoffmann finished last, in 22nd place, in the women's 5,000 metres final at the European Athletics Championships.
SWIMMING – Two Luxembourg swimmers were in action at the swimming Europeans in Paris on Tuesday. Rémi Fabiani had set a national record of 48.44 seconds in the morning heats for the 100m freestyle, but finished 7th in his semi-final that evening, missing out on the final. Teammate Ralph Daleiden-Ciuferri also failed to progress from the heats.
