KAYL HIT-AND-RUN – A teenager died in a hit-and-run near Kayl in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police have identified and arrested the suspected driver involved in the tragedy, which took place around 3.30am on the CR166 between Kayl and Schifflange. It is understood that two teenagers were walking along the road when a car travelling from the direction of Schifflange struck one of them, a 16-year-old boy.
COMMUTER DISRUPTION – The N4 between Esch-sur-Alzette and Audun-le-Tiche is closed in both directions for three days from 6am today. The closure, for roadworks, will remain in place until 10pm on Wednesday. The route is heavily used by cross-border commuters, who are advised to plan for possible disruption. A detour will be in place for the duration of the works. Meanwhile, no trains will run between Luxembourg City and Trier until 20 September due to major summer works, with replacement buses operating throughout.
LEAVING HOME LATER – Young Luxembourgers leave the family home later than neighbours, according to new figures from Eurostat. Young adults in the Grand Duchy continue to live at home until an average age of 26.6, slightly above the EU average of 26.3. That compares with 23.8 in France, 24.1 in Germany and 26.2 in Belgium. According to property portal Immotop.lu, house prices in Luxembourg have soared by more than 60% over the last decade, making high housing costs a likely factor in moving out later.
US WILDFIRE – Around 42,000 people have evacuated in Reno, Nevada, as the fast-moving Hawk Fire threatens homes and structures. The wind-driven blaze has grown to more than 15,000 acres, destroying homes and injuring six people, including three first responders. A state of emergency has been declared in Washoe County, with tens of thousands more residents warned to prepare to leave.
NORWAY'S KING HOSPITALISED – Norway’s King Harald V is in a serious condition after his health deteriorated over the weekend while being treated in hospital. The 89-year-old monarch is receiving antibiotics for a bacterial infection in his blood, alongside treatment for haemolytic anaemia. Europe’s oldest reigning monarch has cancelled upcoming engagements, with family members visiting him in hospital.
UKRAINE ELECTIONS CALL – Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected calls for elections during the ongoing war with Russia, warning that holding a vote now could divide the country. His comments follow a call from his former defence minister for the country to organise elections. Zelensky says the security situation makes elections too dangerous at present.
ATHLETICS – Luxembourg's Ruben Querinjean delivered another triumphant result yesterday at the Diamond League competition in Poland, coming fourth in the 3000m steeplechase. As well as securing the best finish for a European competitor, he also broke his own national record, improving it by 4.11 seconds. His new time is now 8:5.36. Ethiopia's Gemechu Godana came in first place with a time of 8:2.74.
TENNIS – World number four Coco Gauff dominated Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4 to win her first title of 2026 at the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati yesterday. The victory for the 22-year-old over third-ranked Pegula gave her a second Cincinnati crown. Gauff claimed her first WTA title since last October in Wuhan, having come up short in finals in Miami and Rome this year.
FOOTBALL – UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says FIFA chief Gianni Infantino should quit or face a leadership challenge, amid growing pressure over his abandoned investment plans. UEFA has threatened to boycott FIFA competitions, with several football federations also withdrawing support for Infantino. But Ceferin says he will not seek the FIFA presidency, insisting he is happy leading European football and wants to protect his credibility.
