TRIER ACCIDENT – A serious crash has happened on the B53 near Trier, close to the Trier-Quint exit. Two cars collided on Tuesday evening, injuring several people. Police, US military police, the Red Cross, and an Air Rescue helicopter were called to the scene.
SUMMER HEAT RECORD – Luxembourg has just had its hottest summer since records began in 1947, with an average temperature recorded at Findel airport of 20.6°C. A new heat record of 41.4°C was set in Remich in June. The summer was also drier than usual, leaving rivers and streams at extremely low levels.
ASIAN TIGER MOSQUITO – The Asian tiger mosquito has been detected several times in Bonnevoie since 2023. It can carry diseases like dengue fever. Health inspectors are going door-to-door today around Parc Kaltreis, urging residents to empty standing water and cover rain barrels to stop it spreading.
GERMAN SPEAKING COUNTRIES SUMMIT – Grand Duke Guillaume has attended the informal summit for German speaking countries for the first time as Luxembourg's head of state. The two-day summit is being held in Innsbruck and Alpbach in Austria.
UK STARMER AND BAYEUX TAPESTRY – Keir Starmer is standing down as an MP, giving up his Holborn and St Pancras seat after 11 years. He recently stepped down as prime minister and Labour leader, and says he'll now focus on international issues including defence and trade.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron is attending the opening of a Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum today, alongside Prime Minister Andy Burnham. It's the first time the nearly 1,000-year-old tapestry has been loaned to the UK by France. King Charles and Queen Camilla are also attending, with the King due to give a speech. Macron will hold bilateral talks with Burnham on Thursday.
G20 FINANCE MINISTERS MEETING – Criticism is mounting at the G20 finance ministers' meeting in North Carolina, as Russia takes part for the first time since the Ukraine war began. European ministers have refused to join a group photo with their Russian counterpart, while several US media outlets have been denied accreditation.
IRAN WAR – The US has carried out fresh air strikes on Iranian air defences, radar sites, and Revolutionary Guard vessels, calling it a response to Iranian missile attacks on American bases the day before. Iranian missiles were intercepted overnight over Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain. Iran says it will now tighten its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
GERMANY DRONE ATTACK – German foreign minister Johann Wadephul is briefing EU counterparts in Ireland today on the attempted drone attack at Leipzig airport. Germany says Russia was behind last month's drone incident. and it has already closed the Russian consulate general in response. Moscow denies the allegations.
VENICE FILM FESTIVAL – The Venice Film Festival opens today. George Clooney is being honoured with the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement. Twenty-one films are in competition for the top prize this year, with a host of Hollywood stars expected in Venice.
CYCLING – Bastien Tronchon has won stage 10 of the Vuelta cycling race in Spain in a sprint finish. Spain's Enric Mas remains the overall leader. Today's stage is a flat route from Cartagena to Lorca.
FOOTBALL – Yesterday was deadline day in most of Europe's top football leagues, the final day for summer transfers. Manchester City matched the English transfer record, signing Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for around €145 million. The only more expensive Premier League transfer was Sweden's Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool. Worldwide, only Kylian Mbappe and Neymar have commanded higher fees.
The Luxembourg Football Federation has unveiled new home and away kits, marking the start of its partnership with German supplier JAKO. The red home kit features the national lion, while the away kit uses the flag's light blue. Both will debut in this month's Nations League games against Bulgaria and Iceland.
TENNIS – Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff both eased into round two at the US Open, with Mirra Andreeva also through. Alexander Zverev and Flavio Cobolli won on the men's side, Cobolli fighting back from two sets down.
