The riders are back in the mountains. The first of three tough stages in the Alps takes the peloton over a total of 3,800 metres of elevation gain. After around 20 kilometres, the road starts to climb. The ascent to the Côte d’Engins is 11.4 kilometres long and has an average gradient of 5.4%. The Category 1 summit is reached after 36.7 kilometres at an altitude of 854 metres.
However, the climbing is far from over at that point. The riders continue uphill for another 15 kilometres before getting a chance to recover somewhat on a descent. Afterwards, a Category 2 climb and two Category 3 climbs await the peloton, including the man in yellow, Tadej Pogačar, before they tackle the final ascent.
