Housing2,200 apartments planned in "New Hollerich"

It is one of the biggest construction projects that the municipality of Luxembourg has launched in recent years.

A total of 21 hectares have been reserved for the construction of apartments, offices, and businesses. "New Hollerich" will be located at the site of Heintz van Landewyck and Paul Wurth, or, in other words, between Rue de Hollerich and the local train rails.

Plans envision a total of 2,200 apartments in the area, thus allowing an estimated 4,500 to 6,000 people to live there. Furthermore, around 5,500 employees are expected to work in the newly built office spaces.

The private park of Heintz van Landewyck will remain intact and become public land, thereby allowing it to be used as the centre of the new district. Other parts of former buildings will also be integrated into the new construction project, as for instance the former administrative centre of the cigarette producer.

To connect New Hollerich with the rest of the city's areas, new streets will have to be constructed, while the tram is also expected to be linked.

Local residents have meanwhile expressed scepticism towards the project, most notably because of the enormous dimensions of the undertaking. Some fear that a second Cloche d'Or is in the making.
