The Cité Syrdall neighbourhood in Wecker has long been an issue for the Wecker municipal council. Whilst in the 70s, the plans were for the neighbourhood to be destined to students. The accommodation was built, but students never moved in.
However, over the last thirty years the site has resembled a landfill rather than a residential area. In light of its less-than-successful being, 21 out of the 39 buildings will be demolished by the Cité Syrdall clean-up fund.
The fund owns nearly 80% of the six hectares that make up the site, meaning it owns 200 units of the 220 based on the site. The fund had to negotiate with 120 separate owners to buy out these apartments and is still negotiating with six others.
The demolition work will begin during the course of the year in order to allow the fund to build different housing. The minister specified that the fund has a particular layout plan that is nearly finalised and will be checked for approval by competent authorities in the next few weeks.
Each municipal council in Wecker has had to deal with the recurring topic of the Cité Syrdall, predominantly due to unpaid bills for water and domestic waste.
