Luxembourg Minister of Defence François Bausch and US ambassador to Luxembourg Randy Evans signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday afternoon regarding the WSA military depot in Sanem. The US Air Force is seeking to increase the number of items stored in Sanem. These are mostly comprised of replacement parts and digital devices.

The Minister of Defence underlined the fact that no weapons or ammunition are stored in the Grand Duchy, repeating that it was purely expensive electronic materials. He described them as sophisticated devices used by the US Air Force.

The journey to this Memorandum of Understanding was somewhat difficult, according to Bausch. He said any current dealings with the USA were subjected to immense scrutiny, particularly in terms of restructuring.

As the US Air Force will be increasing the storage at their Luxembourgish depot, the number of employees in Sanem is set to be doubled. Bausch said there were currently around 150 employees on site, including guards, and this would be increased to 300. He described this as good news for the Luxembourg jobs market as many of the positions available would not require qualifications, increasing availability for jobseekers.

The law is still yet to be voted on in the Chamber of Deputies.
