Luxembourg is currently experiencing a staff shortage among teachers. No less than 300 people will have to be newly recruited full time for the upcoming school year in the country's primary schools. Over the course of 2021 alone, 50 primary school teachers are going to retire.

In this context, the Ministry of Education has announced that it will launch a new recruitment drive for so-called "lateral entrants", i.e. people with a bachelor's degree related to "the objectives in primary schools".

However, it is as of yet unknown how many of these lateral entrants will need to be recruited in order to fill all of the available positions. In 2020, over 200 people were recruited in this way, in addition to 113 certified teachers.

As for secondary schools, there are currently around 5,200 teachers across the country. About 450 new secondary school teachers are expected to be recruited over the upcoming school years.

Seeing as the most amount of overtime is currently being registered in classes on manual labour, the majority of available teaching positions are currently within the fields of vocational trainings, such as florist, gardener, tiler, mechanic, or jobs related to the hospitality sector.

All of this information was provided by Minister of Education Claude Meisch in his reply to a parliamentary question on the subject by MP Martine Hansen from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV).
