'Sober Buddy Challenge'77% of participants complete alcohol-free January

The Cancer Foundation launched its 'Sober Buddy Challenge' for a second year in a row, inviting participants to abstain from alcohol all throughout January.

1,215 people, including two RTL journalists, participated in the Cancer Foundation’s Dry January challenge. 77% of them managed to fully abstain from drinking alcohol during the first month of the year, while 97% of participants said they wanted to take the challenge again in 2023.

Lucienne Thommes, director of the Cancer Foundation, explained that alcohol consumption remains the second-highest risk behaviour for causing for cancer. “It is also a a factor that can easily be avoided,” Thommes further noted.

Aside from a reduced risk for cancer, abstaining from alcohol also has other advantages, revealed the participants of the Sober Buddy Challenge. 46% of them said that they slept better, while 36% stated that they saved money in January. 33% conveyed that they lost weight and 25% believe they were able to concentrate better.
