In Beggen, the Guides and Scouts of the St Christophe group have been organising the traditional Buergbrennen since the 1970s, keeping alive the longstanding Luxembourg custom of symbolically driving away winter.
A glimpse into the preparations for the Buergbrennen with the Guides and Scouts in Beggen (available in Luxembourgish).

Each year, around 30 volunteers are involved in preparing and building the large wooden structure that will be set alight. On Sunday evening, the event begins with a torchlit procession, before the bonfire is lit after 7pm.

The structure itself is made from wooden pallets, old Christmas trees, and timber logs. Organising such an event also requires careful planning, including appropriate insurance coverage.

Across Luxembourg, Buergbrennen fires are traditionally lit on the weekend after Ash Wednesday. The custom symbolically marks the end of winter. In many towns and villages, local associations take charge of the celebration, from scout groups to volunteer fire brigades, ensuring that the tradition continues to be passed down through generations.
