The demonstrators protested the call to arms, emphasising the need to focus efforts on peace processes.
Initiated by the OGBL (Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation) and the “Friddensplattform” (Peace Platform), the protest included some 30 organisations.
With the USA pushing NATO members to gear up, the organisers deemed it time to once again take to the streets. NATO members are being pushed to invest 2% of GDP, an agreement few have so far lived up to, that is €300 million per year, in the military.
According to the OGBL, sectors such as education, health, humanitarian aid, and infrastructure should take precedence and are more worthy of investment.
Borne out of a European-wide peace network against the nuclear arms race and a growth in military spending, the Peace Movement mobilised large numbers of people, especially in 80s.
Their popularity however then declined, and it has been 10 years since the last protest in Luxembourg. With no shortage in causes however, organisers think it is time to bring them back to life.
